Jazz Conception is a new and exciting way for players at all levels to learn the language of jazz! Each book/CD set features 21 solo etudes based on chord changes to standards and blues.
The same 21 etudes transposed and adapted for the main jazz instruments.
See and hear how a well known soloist phrases and articulates and play along with or without the soloist on the CD.
Sing along with one of todays finest, swinging New York rhythm sections: Mike LeDonne on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums.
Start out fairly easy, then get progressively more difficult.
Use the etudes as a bridge to solos of the masters that are usually more complicated and involved.
Learn melodies and lines that will give you a solid jazz vocabulary and musicality.
Use the book/CD sets for private lessons, for self-study, or in any combination up to a full jazz ensemble, including flute and clarinet.
If you are more advanced you may want to use the book to develop your sight reading abilities, for transcribing the etudes off the CD (then check against the book) or for just having fun playing along with a great jazz rhythm section.
Use as an improvisation study, learning how to construct a swinging, logical solo – works especially well in combination with the Study Guide.
The Jazz Conception Series is also perfectly suited for the class room. It can be used to develop younger students jazz style in a big band or small group. In an improvisation class the teacher can use the etudes as studies in improvisation. The Study Guide provides an analysis of each etude, along with practice assignments for each etude.

Jim Snidero
Originally from Washington D.C., Jim Snidero arrived in New York in 1981, after attending the University of North Texas, and has established himself as a distinguished soloist and recording artist. He has recorded as a leader for Toshiba/EMI, Criss Cross, Double-Time and Red Records, receiving four stars from Down Beat. Jim has been a member of Toshiko Akyioshi´s Jazz Orchestra since 1983, performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Jack McDuff, Eddie Palmieri, and Frank Wess, among others, and is a frequent member of the Mingus Big Band. Snidero is an instructor at the Mannes School of Music in New York City and has given jazz workshops throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Jim is also a Selmer clinician.

Jim has done a marvelous job creating these etudes to demonstrate the essence of the jazz language -- the melodic phrases and accompanying articulations and phrasings that have been the soul of jazz throughout this century. The CD makes it easy and fun to learn the authentic jazz language. A very valuable addition to our educational literature. (Jamey Aebersold)

One of the best tools I’ve seen for learning and practicing jazz vocabulary and phrasing. (Randy Brecker)

Jim Snidero has created a valuable and flexible tool for jazz education ...highly recommended. (Down Beat)

Saxophonists can use the flute and clarinet editions to work on doubling chops. It’s really great to play along with the jazz flutist legend Frank Wess, or Ken Peplowski on clarinet. (Down Beat)

...an invaluable aid to the improvisor. Using the book to analyze and understand the ideas and using the CD to get the sound and feel of the same material gets to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible. I highly recommend this book, both for class and individual study. (Dan Haerle, Prof. of Music, University of North Texas)

These etudes give the grammar of the language of jazz great clarity. (Jimmy Heath)

Saxophonists can use the flute and clarinet editions to work on doubling chops. It’s really great to play along with the jazz flutist legend Frank Wess, or Ken Peplowski on clarinet. (Down Beat)

...an excellent book which gives a solid picture of jazz time, articulation, phrasing and vocabulary ...musically and harmonically interesting, contemporary sounding, yet relatively simple to play and read. Both saxophone books are highly recommended. (Saxophone Journal)

This book is essential. It’s clear, practical and is perfectly adaptaed for guitar. Really excellent. (Mike Stern)

Conrad Herwig has edited the etudes, suggesting optional octave displacements and valueable alternate slide positions. The etudes are logically written, very melodic in nature, and surprisingly trombonistic ...played with great style and accuracy by jazz great Conrad Herwig. (International Trombone Magazine)
